Oral herpes, caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV 1), is one of the most common viral infections in the world. It’s primarily spread through oral contact, kissing, sharing utensils or razors, or oral, genital contact. HSV 1 often causes cold sores (blisters on or around the lips), but many people carry the virus without symptoms. Once contracted, the virus remains in the body for life and can periodically reactivate.
Most people are unaware they have HSV 1, especially if they’ve never had a cold sore. But knowing your status helps with informed decisions around intimacy, symptom management, and avoiding transmission. Our Oral Herpes HSV 1 At-Home Test Kit makes this easy. Using just a finger, prick blood sample, you can check for HSV 1 antibodies in 15 minutes, no clinic or lab required.
The test is clinically proven to have >98% accuracy, and includes everything you need: sterile lancet, dropper, test device, buffer solution, and step, by, step instructions. It’s ISO 13485 and CE certified, with shipping in plain, unmarked packaging for full discretion.
Symptoms & Complications
Asymptomatic: A majority of HSV 1 infections are silent, especially in the early stages. Many people carry HSV 1 and never show visible cold sores, making regular testing important if you’ve had close contact with someone infected.
Mild: Common symptoms include a tingling or burning sensation near the mouth, followed by painful blisters or sores on the lips or around the mouth. Some may also develop swollen lymph nodes, fever, or general fatigue during initial infection. These episodes usually resolve within 1, 2 weeks.
Severe: In rare cases, especially in immunocompromised individuals, HSV 1 can cause more serious symptoms: widespread sores, difficulty eating, or secondary infections. Very rarely, HSV 1 can infect the eyes (herpes keratitis) or even the brain (herpes encephalitis), though this is extremely uncommon. Neonatal herpes (passed during childbirth) is also serious, though more commonly linked to HSV 2.
Untreated Risks
While there’s no cure for HSV 1, managing the virus is very possible. Knowing your status can help prevent transmission, especially during asymptomatic shedding. Without awareness, someone might unknowingly pass the virus to partners, particularly through oral, genital contact, which can cause genital herpes. Cold sore outbreaks can also be managed with antiviral medications once diagnosed. If you're positive, you can also take steps to avoid triggering outbreaks (stress, sun exposure, illness) and protect vulnerable contacts like infants or immunocompromised individuals.
Early & Repeat Testing Recommended
Window Period Testing: HSV 1 IgG antibodies (the type this test detects) typically become detectable 3, 6 weeks after initial infection. Most people seroconvert by week 6. If you've had a recent possible exposure, test at the 6 week mark for the most accurate result. Early testing (before 3 weeks) may yield a false negative.
Confirmatory Test: If your result is positive, consider confirming with a healthcare provider, especially if you're symptomatic or considering treatment. If your result is negative but you suspect recent exposure, repeat the test 2, 3 weeks later to account for delayed antibody formation.
Partner Testing Encouraged: HSV 1 can be transmitted easily through kissing or oral sex, even without visible sores. If you’ve tested positive, encourage your partner(s) to test too. Awareness helps avoid re-exposure, manage symptoms, and reduce transmission during asymptomatic periods.
How It Works
Collect Sample: Use the alcohol pad to clean your fingertip. Prick your finger with the sterile lancet, and use the dropper to collect a small drop of blood.
Apply & Wait: Deposit the blood into the test device and add the specified number of buffer drops. Let the test sit on a flat surface for 15 minutes.
Read Results: A control line confirms the test worked. Two lines = positive (HSV 1 antibodies detected), one line = negative. If the control line fails to appear, the test is invalid and should be repeated with a new kit.
